Learn About Magnetic Stirrers

A magnetic stirrer is a popular tool in laboratories around the world and consists of a rotating magnet or a stationary electromagnet that creates a rotating magnetic field. Mixing solutions is easier than ever before since the invention of this device. Put a flask filled with liquid or a beaker on the deck of the unit, and use the magnetic ‘stir bar’ or ‘follower’ that is deposited into the liquid. When the device is turned on, the rotating magnet in the unity forces the stir bar to circulate at the same speed, successfully stirring the liquid.

Magnetic stirrers are preferable because they are much quieter aside from the stir bar, and nothing comes into contact with the flask or liquid, lengthening the lifespan of the unit. The stir rods are chemically inert, allowing them to submerge in liquids without affecting them. They are easily sterilized, but due to their fragile design (a metal magnet inside a plastic coating), the rods may degrade over time. Some magnetic stirrers have a heating function that heats the flask from below, and some have a changeable speed function. When dealing with very viscous liquids, the stir bar may only rotate effectively at lower speeds. On the other hand, making a solution from heavy crystals at a fast speed typically dissolves the solid quicker.

If you’re interested in purchasing a new magnetic stirrer, check out 2mag USA, an international leader specializing in motorless magnetic stirrers and stirring systems. 2mag stirrers are unlike other laboratory stirrers because of their unique design and superior quality. They are more reliable than conventional stirrers and completely dust, maintenance, and wear-free.
