Let’s chat about the waste management industry in Australia. It’s a fair dinkum big deal, worth about $12.6 billion.

That’s not a small change, and it’s playing a crucial role in keeping our country clean and green. In 2020-21, we Aussies produced a whopping 75.8 million tonnes of rubbish.

To put that in perspective, it’s about 2.95 tonnes per person. Crikey!

That’s a lot of waste, and it’s gone up by 20% over the last 15 years. Our growing population and booming economy are behind this increase.

This industry isn’t just about taking out the trash. It’s pumping about $6.9 billion into our economy every year and giving jobs to around 50,000 people.

That’s a lot of Vegemite sandwiches!

Where’s All This Waste Coming From?

    Let’s break it down:

    1. Our homes: 14 million tonnes
    2. Businesses and factories: 32.8 million tonnes
    3. Building sites: 29 million tonnes

Believe it or not, all that construction and demolition work makes up nearly half of our total waste. Who would’ve thought?

How does waste management affect the environment?

    Recycling: We’re Doing Alright, Mate

We’re not doing too shabby when it comes to recycling. We’re managing to recycle about 60% of our waste, and we’re recovering resources from 63% of it.

Not bad, but there’s always room for improvement, especially with plastics. We’re only recycling 13% of our plastic waste.

Come on, Australia, we can do better! The recycling part of the industry is worth about $5.1 billion to our economy.

    That’s nothing to sneeze at!

Which Two Methods of Waste Management Are Best for Society?

    Challenges and Clever Ideas

Like any industry, we’ve got our fair share of challenges. We’re still working on how to recycle more plastics and coming up with better ways to manage all our waste.

But don’t worry, we’ve got some clever cookies working on it. They’re developing fancy sorting facilities and new ways to recycle organic waste.

It’s all about making our waste management more efficient and better for the environment.

    What’s Next for Waste Management?

As we keep making more waste (hopefully not too much more), the industry’s got to keep up. There’s plenty of room for growth and new ideas, especially when it comes to recycling plastics.

We might see some cool new tech and different ways of doing things in the future. The waste management industry in Australia is a big deal.

It’s not just about keeping our country clean; it’s also about putting money in people’s pockets and coming up withsmart ways to look after our environment. As we all become more aware of how important it is to take care of our planet, and as the government brings in stricter rules, this industry is going to become even more important.

It’s not just managing our rubbish; it’s turning it into something useful for the future. By using new technology like waste management software with WasteVantage, getting better at recycling, and thinking about how we can reuse things instead of just chucking them in the bin, the waste management industry is helping to create a better future for all of us.

So next time you put out your bins or see a recycling truck roll by, remember – you’re looking at a multi-billion dollar industry that’s working hard to keep Australia clean and green. And that’s something we can all be proud of, fair dinkum!
