What Is Lapis Lazuli?
Lapis Lazuli – often known simply as ‘lapis’, is a vibrantly coloured blue rock that is composed of a variety of different minerals, usually including sodalite, calcite and pyrite (the latter being visible as small gold-coloured flecks within the stone). The presence of pyrite is used to verify that specimens are genuine. The richest blue stones with the fewest inclusions are valued most highly, and today lower quality specimens are sometimes dyed to improve their appearance.
Lapis has been mined since ancient times in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and was heavily used by the ancient Egyptians and others. The name is thought to be derived from the Persian word ‘lazur’, which means ‘blue stone’, although lapis is not the only stone to have been called by this name. It is used in architecture (on the outer facades of buildings), as well as for making jewellery and ornaments – and of course for crystal healing too.

Using Lapis Lazuli:
Like other crystals, lapis can be placed directly on the relevant part of the body during crystal healing sessions or meditation. You could also carry a small tumblestone, palmstone or thumbstone around with you, or wear lapis jewellery, to get its benefits during the day too.
Use of lapis lazuli for healing is best carried out in conjunction with any other treatment prescribed by your doctor, and crystals shouldn’t be used as a substitute for professional medical advice.
All crystals should be cleansed regularly, and this is easily done by holding the stone under running water, then allowing it to absorb sunlight for several hours, to recharge its energy. Some people also cleanse their stones by placing them in sand, rather than water.
