    Oily skin is characterized by a robust, shiny, oily complexion with large, visible pores. In addition, this skin type tends to have blemished skin. The following areas of skin are particularly affected: scalp, forehead, the rest of the face, chest, or back.

    What Causes Oily Skin?

    The cause of oily skin is an overproduction of the sebum glands, in which too much body fat, also called sebum or sebum, is produced. The secreted fat actually has the task of keeping the skin supple and protecting it from environmental influences. However, if sebum production exceeds the usual one to two grams per day, the skin is too oily. Overproduction in turn has various causes.

    In addition to the hereditary predisposition, various clinical pictures can cause oily skin as symptoms: a disorder of the adrenal cortex, ovarian diseases, Parkinson’s disease, dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system. In addition, some medications, such as sedatives or hormone preparations, affect sebum production.

    The increased production of hormones (testosterone, androgens) during puberty is the most common reason for oily skin and often results in blemished skin with pimples and blackheads or acne. But other hormonal changes can also cause oily skin over the course of life. For example during pregnancy and after childbirth (breastfeeding), after stopping hormonal contraceptives such as birth control pills and shortly before menstruation.

    Our diet and various behaviors can also have a negative impact on fat production and thus increase oily skin: too much stress, malnutrition, and malnutrition as well as excessive alcohol consumption.

    Care and cleaning for oily skin

    Proper facial cleansing is crucial for both women and men. It is important not to cleanse the face too often, as this can damage the skin’s natural defenses. Our experts recommend cleaning and caring for the face twice a day (morning and evening) with suitable, mild products. A mild facial toner is suitable here, for example. You should avoid harsh, alcohol-based toners and alkaline soaps. These attack the protective acid mantle.

    In addition, apply a mattifying peeling 2-3 times a week, which also removes flakes from the skin, cleanses the pores, and thus works against pimples and blackheads.

    Your daily facial care should also suit your skin type. Light, non-greasy, and oil-free creams, such as a moisturizer for blemished skin, are ideal.
