What grade is breast cancer?

Cancer cells are graded depending on how different they are from normal breast cells and how quickly they are multiplying. Grades are different from the stage of cancer.

Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS):

There are three grades in DCIS which are usually referred to as low, intermediate and high.

Breast cancer occurs in two broad categories-

Invasive breast cancer:

Invasive breast cancer cells (in filtering) break through normal breast tissue and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream into the lymph nodes and other parts of the body. There are different grades of invasive breast cancer.

Grade1: looks like normal breast cells but they are slowly growing.

Grade 2: They look less like the normal cells and are multiplying faster

Grade 3: they look different from the normal cells and are quickly mutating.

Here, the patients are recommended chemotherapy to destroy cancerous cells that may have spread as a result of cancer growing at a faster rate.

Noninvasive breast cancer:

Noninvasive breast cancer (insitu) cells remain in the particular location of the breast without spreading to the lymph nodes, lobules, or the surrounding tissues.

Other types of breast cancer include metaplastic carcinoma, phyllodes tumor, angiosarcoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma. It is also determined where breast disease started from. For instance, lobules, duct, etc. how the disease grows, and several other factors.

Aggressive breast cancer

Some breast cancers are more aggressive than others. But unlike some cancers, the type of breast cancer may not always determine how aggressive the disease is in an individual patient. To determine how aggressive breast cancer is, doctors will examine the tumor, screen the tumor under the microscope and assign a grade from 1 to 3. Grade 3 cancers are considered to be the most aggressive breast cancer. Cancer is said to be aggressive meaning the cells divide and multiply at a faster rate and spread to other parts of the body quickly.

Following are the most aggressive breast cancer-

Triple-negative breast cancer:

This type of cancer tests negative for the hormones estrogen and progesterone and the protein HER2.

Inflammatory breast cancer:

This is a rare form of breast cancer that causes redness and swelling.

A new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been tested at Case Western Reserve University by researchers not only pointing to the early stages of breast cancer but also differentiates between aggressive and slow-growing cancers. Doing both will help doctors find the right treatment for breast cancer patients. Slow-moving breast cancers produce less EDB-FN.
