The idea behind these 6 Best historical places in the world list was to let some bucket list wander into you. It was initially 5 sites, then 10. The more I continued my research – the more bucket list miracles I found.
I know what you’re thinking now – “They needed to do research to find Angkor Wat, Easter Island, and the Pyramids? Lol, such a fond traveler.”
Indeed, this research focused on their history and the myths and legends that surround them. I was looking for the “wow” factor they would inspire at first sight. I agree that I have not been to all these wonderful historical places of the world… yet. They are on my bucket list, though. Now it’s time to make them your part too!

1. Great Wall of China, China
Some items were created with the aim of keeping the sole population out. The Great Wall of China was one of them, but sad to say, in this modern era, it was adversely affected. Yes, you guessed it. It is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in China and people come to see it in hoards.
Why go there? The Great Wall of China is one of the few man-made structures that can be seen from space. If the orbiting astronauts caught sight of it, why not you. Okay, you won’t see it all, it makes its way from Chinese kilometers to thousands of kilometers, but if you go somewhere like Beijing, you can see it a little bit.
Leave the queues. Choose to travel to a part of the wall that is a long drive away from Beijing like a section of Simatai. You can ride in a cable car or wait until it is night. Simtai is the only section of the Great Wall open at night and places are limited for a twinkling hike, so pre-book or check availability before you leave.

2. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
If you ever want to travel to an enchanted land, Angkor Wat in Cambodia will be the place to go to fulfill your dream. It looks somewhat straight with a fairy tale as well as being the largest religious monument in the world.
Why go there? While Angkor Wat in Cambodia is not really a fairy tale castle, it has its own trench and is steeped in more legends than the fictional Camelot. When you wander through it and see some of the temple buildings consumed by the roots of giant trees, it may inspire you to write your own version of the enchanted forest.
Leave the queues. Open with cocktail gates before or after, opening at 5 am. An alternative is to wait until 4 in the late afternoon, by which time everyone else is hot, bothered and on their way home.
Best Time to Go. Cambodia has cooler months between November and March and many visitors take advantage of it. June to October is cool on the front of people, but is very hot and can also be wet.
3. Petra, Jordan
Do you think there is anything good about living in a cave? If you do, you need to investigate the most sophisticated people on the planet. Petra in Jordan is an entire cave town carved with the solid rock that stretches back to antiquity and beyond.
Why go there? There is really nothing to compare with Petra anywhere in the world. It is truly monumental and imaginative on the grandest scale. The stones of the tower are intricately studded in pink stone and have temples, monasteries, and tombs inside. But what nature gives can also be taken away and it is a bad habit to turn soft stones into dust over time, so make sure you visit Petra before it becomes another pile of historical debris.
Leave the queues. The best way to leave the queues to go to Petra is to open at 8 am. You will be well in and ahead of the morning rush of tour buses.
Best Time to Go. Petra faces heat in the summer months. Visit the cool months from March to May or September to November to be able to move around comfortably.
4. Pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza
The Pyramids of Giza are the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world. They also stand only to this day. Mythical tombs were built more than 4,500 years ago to prepare the Egyptian Pharaoh of the Old Kingdom for later life.
The reason behind the creation of the Sphinx is still unknown. Egyptologists suggest that its purpose would be to associate Pharaoh with the sun god – Ra. Others believe that his purpose was to protect the kings. Some even claim that the Sphinx is thousands of years older than the pyramids!
Many mysteries surround the Giza Plateau. Scientists are still unaware of the construction techniques used to erect the ordered monuments. To build just the Great Pyramid of Giza, the ancient Egyptians used over 2 million limestone blocks, each weighing about 2.5 tons.
5. Machu Picchu, Peru
If you want to be at the top of the world and go to Machu Picchu in Peru, there is only one place. It may take you a while to get there to go about two and a half thousand feet above sea level, but someone said that is there any rush? Time, at least at the top of the mountains, still stands.
Why go there? If you manage to get Machu Picchu, pat yourself on the back, because even the Spanish invaders never found it and they were too hot to win everything. If you make it through the woods and mountains, congratulations, you won’t be on cloud nine at all, but well with it.
Leave the queues. Think of being an all-nighter and find a solution to the queues at Machu Picchu. You do not have to queue to go in, but you have to take a bus. The first one leaves at around 5.30, think about going there three or four hours earlier and all you can get is a seat. Don’t forget to buy your ticket the day before or when you get up without taking anything.
Best Time to Go. Machu Picchu, due to its geographical location, has a wet and dry season. April to October are the months that constitute the dry season with premium months to occur from June to September.
6. Stonehedge
The most famous ancient site in the United Kingdom cannot be excluded from the list. Especially since it is older than the pyramid. Stonehedge is not only among the oldest structures on Earth but also among the most mysterious.
Who manufactures Stonehenge? Unknown.
Why was it created? Unknown.
The ancient people (who allegedly did not even find the wheel) transported 45 tons of stones from 200 miles away and how did they manage to lift them higher? Big unknown!
It is known that Stonehenge was built in several different stages, with 56 holes that used to hold more stones. One thing I do know about it is that Stonehedge embodies a mysterious ancient site and is 100% eligible for your bucket list.
