Smart devices have become a key sight in any home in the past few years and for good reason. Smart technology can make everyday life a little easier by automating those little things you might forget to do. If you have not jumped onto the smart technology bandwagon yet, reading through this article will give you an idea of how you can begin to make your home, a smart home.

    Smart Hub

The key to any smart home is the home hub. A home hub acts as the beating heart of a smart home as this is where you can communicate with the rest of your devices from. Smart home hubs are devices, such as a Google Home Hub or an Amazon Echo. Smart home hubs allow you to link most of your smart devices and often to use your voice to commands to control the devices. However, this is dependent on if both devices are compatible.

    Temperature

Temperature control is something else that can be helped by smart technology. This is done by a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats allow you to be in control of your heating no matter where you are via a companion app on your phone. This is because a smart thermostat will connect to theWi-Fiin your home to allow you access wherever you are. So, keep in mind when buying that a stable and constant internet connection is best.

Smart thermostats have a range of features including the ability to control them remotely, the ability to learn about your daily habits and control your heating automatically and some thermostats you can also control via your home hub with voice commands.

When it comes to installation, a smart thermostat is installed through the same connection your regular thermostat is. These thermostats will work will all the different boiler types but may not work with certain brands. So, for example, if you have a boiler made by Vaillant, not all smart thermostats may work with it.

    Smart Doorbell

Smart doorbells are a common site with them being seen outside many homes. Just like with the smart thermostats, they connect to your phone via a companion app. The best part of a smart doorbell is it allows you to see who is at your front door via the built-in camera which streams to your companion app. This is a great feature for when you get someone knocking at the door and you are out of the house.

    Smart Lock

Smart locks are also a great implement to a smart home. Smart locks allow you to have an app on your phone which controls your lock using a Bluetooth connection and or your WIFI connection. On some models, there is also a keypad that can have several codes programmed in so that if you lose your phone you can still access your home.

Lighting is another element that you can add to your smart home. Smart lighting will allow you to be in control of your lighting from your phone. The advantage of having lights that you can control via your phone is that you will never accidentally leave a light on and drive your electricity bill up.Another great feature is that some bulbs can change colours and will have pre-set light levels on their companion app, meaning that you already have a host of options upon unboxing.

Another great feature of these smart bulbs is that they are LED powered, meaning while they cost more than a traditional incandescent bulb, but you will end up saving money. This is because LED’s require less wattage to power than an incandescent bulb does. So, while these smart bulbs can cost as much as £30 in some cases, in the long run, you will be saving money on your energy bills.
