Mullaly initially considered replacing systems with other brand-name servers and storage or using a do-it-yourself virtualization solution when researching hardware choices. Purchasing several servers to run VMware with a single storage unit, on the other hand, would be a single point-of-failure issue.
Costs and training were also a source of concern. The company couldn’t afford to go with a solution that would cost around £100,000 over five years, including licence fees and support. Mullaly also claimed that he didn’t have the time to invest in high-end system management training.
“I’m part of a tiny in-house IT team,” he explained. “I only have so much time away from work, and I need a solution that doesn’t need me to master thousands of different skill sets just to manage hardware.”
The next scalable alternative to consider for pooling data centre functions onto hardware and sharing them between virtual machines running on any host in the cluster was hyperconvergence systems. The HCI system also had genuine fangs when it came to all-in-one data protection, which was crucial.
HCI & HC3 System
Carrs’ decision was based on the system’s suitability for a small business and its ability to provide the same level of reliability as systems in much larger enterprises. Mullaly chose Scale Computing’s HC3 solution, which combines storage, compute, and virtualization infrastructure layers into a unified solution architecture for automating IT environment management.
The company values the Scale Computing system’s integrated snapshot data replication for increased business continuity. To help recover from an unanticipated event, every firm must be able to restore data off-site or from a previous point in time.
“Setting up schedules that can produce hourly and/or daily snapshots and then choosing which schedule to apply to which VM is just so simple,” he explained. “However, the most impressive part is that the creation of these snapshots has no impact on system performance.”
Data Loss
Carrs wouldn’t have to worry about licencing difficulties or anything else if they purchased an HCI system. “We’re not going to test the limits of any of our systems.” “All it has to do is run our programme properly and regularly,” he explained. Another advantage of opting for a fully integrated system is the reduced risk of data loss. When more suppliers involved in data protection, there is more data loss — 2.36 terabytes on average.
Carrs chose a slightly larger scale computing system than it needed, but Mullaly believed it was better to have its data centre ready for the next three years than to have to scale up the system along the way. “To allow for data and processing expansion, we went with a system that was nearly twice as big as our greatest estimate.”
He may expand the HC3 solution in the long run by simply adding another node. Carrs now has one three-node cluster operating six VMs on the HC3 Platform, with plans to expand to 8-10 VMs in the future. The platform runs the Priority ERP software, file and print services, remote Desktop Services, anti-virus, and Active Directory.
Keeping an Eye on the Budget
It’s usual for businesses to shift their infrastructure to the cloud, especially if they’re tiny and don’t have a lot of IT resources. Mullaly, on the other hand, was apprehensive that costs would abruptly rise.
“We wanted something that was ours and that we understood how much it would cost,” he explained. “Besides, we still have work to do to improve system reliability and make the most of Scale Computing’s capabilities.”
We reduced customers’ total cost of ownership through Scale Computing’s use of the open source KVM hypervisor, which provides similar functionality to VMware.
Carrs owes its substantial increase in on-time delivery performance over the last six months, at least in part, to its shift to a new infrastructure to power its major ERP product. In the last seven months, there has been no unscheduled downtime. “We are now better able to satisfy clients than we were last year.”
