What Items Cannot Go in a Rental Bin?

The joy of renting a junk bin is that you can simply throw everything you want to get rid of into the rental bin, right? Actually, that’s wrong. Environmentally responsible waste management solutions are what junk bin rental companies like Junk Out provide. That means there are things you can’t toss into the garbage, so here are a few tips to consider before you start tossing stuff into your junk bin rental.

Let’s imagine you’re doing a complete interior renovation on your home, so there’s going to be two waves of junk removal. The first is getting rid of all the unwanted stuff from inside your home: the broken furniture, unwanted appliances, the boxes of magazines, the dusty toys, etc.  Some you can sell, some you can donate, and the rest can go into the garbage bin rental. The second wave is going to be from all the construction waste being generated; old wood trim, lathe and plaster, old drywall, insulation, outdated electrical fixtures, kitchen cupboards and more. So far, so good. There’s nothing on the list that can’t be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. You’ve got the right waste bin rental loaded with the right materials; bricks, stones and aggregates in one bin, all the debris heading for the dump in another. Now, the question arises, what exactly are the things you can’t toss into your junk bin rental?

Things You Can’t Toss into Your Junk Bin Rental

Each municipality has its own way of encouraging proper disposal of materials that can’t be simply tossed into garbage bins for curbside pick up or loaded into waste bin rentals and carted to the dump. They include the following:

    • Paints, solvents, lacquers, and random chemicals. Some areas have companies that will take your old paints and recycle them. For that don’t, you’ll have to follow proper municipal protocols to discard these items, because they can’t be tossed into your garbage bin rental. People who do are being irresponsible and contributing to behaviours that are potentially harmful to habitats, waterways and ecosystems.
    • Automotive fluids. Brake fluids, oils, antifreeze, wiper fluids, transmission fluids and gasoline cannot and should not be tossed into your rental unit. Many of these fluids and coolants are extremely harmful and potentially flammable. Tossing them into a bin headed for the dump could compromise the facility. Take the time to properly dispose of these items by following local guidelines.
    • Toxic cleaning agents. We’re not talking soap here; we’re talking industrial-strength chemical cleaners used on job sites or for cleaning truly soiled areas and materials. These products are almost always manufactured with nothing but chemicals, many of which can be extremely corrosive or, when combined, prone to generating toxic fumes. Again, follow the proper protocols for disposal.
    • Electronics and fuel cells. Because of the materials found in electronics, including reams of plastic, electronics are not always allowed in landfill sites. Many companies collect electronics and help recycle them to avoid them being dumped and polluting local areas. Batteries should also be kept from disposal bins given their mercury content.

Work with Junk Out to Ensure Waste Disposal Is as Green as Possible

When you’re ready to contract your junk bin, contact Junk Out to discuss all your needs. Describe the types of materials you are junking; our team can help guide you and help ensure you’re being as environmentally conscientious as possible.
