In 1909, Womens Day was celebrated in America for the first time on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America chose this day in New York to honor the 1908 strike of the garment workers so that women could protest on this day for their low hours of work and their demands. After this, in the year 1913-14, Women’s Day emerged as a symbol of opposing the war. In the same year, Russian women celebrated International Women’s Day for the first time on the last day of February.

Women also protested the First World War. After this, women in Europe rallied on 8 March to support Peace Activists. But in the year 1975, United Nations started celebrating Women’s Day on 8 March. At the same time, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time globally on 19 March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

Two years later, its date was changed to 8 March in 1913 and since then it has been celebrated every year. Since then, International Women’s Day has been celebrated at different levels till date.
