Google’s AI taps into the minds of the great poets

Let us begin with the famous words of James Dickey, the U.S. Poet Laureate of 1966.

“I need about one hundred fifty drafts of a poem to get it right, and fifty more to make it sound spontaneous.”

We can only imagine what Dickey’s reaction would be about Google’s recent AI project Verse by Verse. He would be able to whip out 150 drafts in a few minutes with the same number of keystrokes. And with those fifty extra clicks, he would have been able to write each passage in the grandest of styles.

Google’s Verse by Verse comes as a great help for poets of all kinds. Whether you are accomplished writers or an aspiring one, this project brings out the best of your creativity. It has tens of thousands of words programmed in it by the world’s grandest poets. Verse by Verse is capable of creating its own poetic gems emulating the style and grammar of the grandmasters.

The testing of this program turned out interesting results. Its users were asked to write first lines to start off a poem. Then there was the option to select up to 3 poets whose style they want to incorporate in their poetry. There is a selection of 22 poets which includes Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, and Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The program then generates more lines of verse, with suggestions from the writers you have selected. The users were required to select a single line at a time from the three poets. The form of poem you are going for must also be selected. For instance, a couplet, free verse, or quatrain.

The users also have to choose a syllable count. Nine is the number used most often. A rhythm pattern also needs to be determined. This enables the precise positioning of the lines that are supposed to rhyme. The results which are finally generated by the program can be tweaked. Altering the wordings can generate new ideas, or you can simply be inspired to make up one yourself.

Google engineer Dave Uthus shared his comment upon this literary helper tool. According to him, the program is trained to have semantic comprehension of which lines should be put together. It is capable of assessing which lines will be suited best to the one you have fed it. Therefore, even if you choose topics that are not common for classic poetry, the system will attempt to make relevant suggestions.

The tool basically mimics the writing style of famous poets. It then creates a finished piece with both machine and human input. The final poem at times is not in any way a masterpiece. Therefore, there is room for improvement in the program. But it gives emerging writers an interactive opportunity to play around with ideas and literary devices. Users can continue practicing to write their own verses with the help of the acquired concepts. Or work upon the final generated poem till it’s an original and perfect piece. Once the poem is exactly how you want, a title can be given to it before saving.

Google also explains that the suggestions Verse by Verse gives is not the original lines written by the poets. But the suggested verses are generated upon the same writing style possessed by the particular poets. In order to create the program, the engineers at Google trained it on a huge number of classic verses. The models were then fine-tuned according to each poet’s style of writing. This way the tool captures them as closely as possible.

Although, as per assignment help London writers its suggestions might not work always, Verse by Verse has the potential to encourage writers. By trial and error, newcomers to the world of poetry can understand the differences in the work of different poets. They can study the patterns and integrate them into their own writing.

Instead of facing a blank page and waiting painstakingly for words and ideas to come forth, just use this program. Think of it as a virtual way to brainstorm and find inspiration that strikes. Any good writer knows that forcing yourself to write does not enable creativity. But finding inspiration is most often the most difficult phases of writing. Especially, when you are into poetry writing.

Coming up with a verse is harder to accomplish because you have to fit ideas in a specific structure. The words have to be perfect and precise and fit with each other. While the rhythm and form should be according to the standard rules of poetry writing. Verse by Verse is a solution to these initial hurdles faced by new poets.

It does a good job of molding the style of renowned poets into your lines. If you do not get the desired result at the first attempt, then just go again. The suggestions might turn up looking funny and nonsensical at times. But they also assist in giving you an idea of how classic poetry should sound like. Even if you have not read any of the classic verses before.

AI is becoming more and more integral throughout different daily activities of our lives. We forget that we are making use of artificial intelligence when we use our smartphones or ride autonomous vehicles. And now it is taking over the world of literary writing. It is not perfect for now, but we are hoping to see it improve in the near future. For more content on AI or any other subject reach out to research paper writing service.
